KDD began with pasteurized milk and yoghurt in Shuwaikh. Its growth into dairy, juice, ice cream and culinary products makes it a useful lens through which to understand changing Kuwaiti homes, tastes and supply chains.

KDD was founded in 1962 as the Danish Kuwaiti Dairy Company ("Dankuwa") by HE Ezzat Mohammad Jaafar, with a 51:49 shareholding between prominent Kuwaitis and the Danish Dairy Federation. The company became 100% Kuwaiti-owned in 1981–82 and adopted the KDD name. Its factory was bombed and heavily damaged during the 1990–91 Iraqi invasion; KDD relocated to temporary facilities to keep serving customers, then rebuilt and modernized through the late 1990s.

Moments that shaped the story

1962

A dairy begins

Production starts in Shuwaikh with pasteurized milk and yoghurt, founded by Ezzat Mohammad Jaafar in partnership with the Danish Dairy Federation.

1972–74

Ice cream

KDD adds ice cream to its product range.

1981–82

Kuwaiti ownership

The company becomes fully Kuwaiti-owned, adopts the KDD name, and opens its Sabhan factory with UHT milk technology.

1985

First exports

KDD begins exporting to GCC markets.

1991

Rebuilding

After the factory is bombed and damaged during the Iraqi invasion, operations relocate to temporary facilities and the company begins a major reconstruction and modernization.
