The airline began when Kuwaiti entrepreneurs saw that a growing economy needed stronger air links. Its aircraft, routes and rebuilding after 1991 reflect the country’s modern history in motion.

Kuwait National Airways began operations in 1954 with DC-3 aircraft serving nearby cities, after an initial 1953 incorporation as Kuwait National Airways Limited. Government ownership, jet aircraft and long-haul routes followed, creating one of the Gulf’s earliest national airlines. The airline has operated from Kuwait International Airport's Terminal 4 since it became operational in August 2018.
